DIY Coconut Oil Sunscreen

Sunscreen is necessary to apply not only in the Summer time – but also whenever you are planning on being outside for periods of time. The sun provides nourishing Vitamin D which is essential for our bodies, however it can also cause a lot of damage. Skin cancer, age spots, and wrinkles can all be caused by prolonged sun exposure.

Store bought sunscreen is the easiest solution, but is it the best? There are chemicals in commercial sunscreens which can not only age skin, but also can absorb into our bloodstreams and cause all sorts of issues. Just like cosmetics, sunscreens have ingredients such as Oxybenzone which are endocrine disruptors. Such a disruption of hormones can cause tumors, cancer, and infertility. YUCK! Avoid toxic ingredients like this at all costs. Instead, make your own DIY coconut oil sunscreen! It’s super easy, and will provide around 25-30 SPF* when made correctly and applied often.

Materials and Ingredients

Instructions

  • Using a double boiler on low-medium heat, melt your coconut oil, sweet almond oil, beeswax, and shea butter together. This should take about 10-15 minutes.
  • Remove from heat, and slowly mix in your non-nano zinc oxide powder. Zinc oxide can be messy, so make sure to wear a mask when you are handling this ingredient.
  • Mix well using a hand mixer or Kitchen Aid mixer for about 10 minutes. It is very important that the zinc oxide is distributed evenly throughout the mixture.
  • Put your mixture into your desired glass container, and let sit in room temperature for about an hour. This will allow the mixture to cool, and you will see what consistency your sunscreen will be from now on.
  • Apply on your skin whenever you will be out in the sun, making sure to avoid your eyes.

*Our SPF is only approximated, as we do not have the scientific testing materials required to provide a 100% accurate SPF. Make sure to apply often, as you should with any sunscreen.
