All Natural Bug Balm

Bug bites are the worst. They irritate your skin and can cause swelling, rashes, and redness. Not only that, but insects like mosquitoes can carry a range of serious and sometimes deadly diseases. Some of these diseases are Malaria, West Nile, and the Zika Virus.

DEET is the active ingredient in store bought bug repellents. DEET is listed as class 3, or “slightly toxic,” to humans. Why on earth would you want to use something on your skin listed as any level of toxic? Your skin is your largest organ, and it absorbs ingredients placed on it. When using DEET products, there is a chance for DEET poisoning. Symptoms of this kind of exposure can include anything from skin or eye irritation, abdominal pain, nausea, or even seizures. Luckily, you can create your own DIY All Natural Bug Balm to keep pests at bay.

  • Using a double boiler, melt the coconut oil, beeswax pastilles, and shea butter on low heat. This should take about 7-10 minutes.
  • Stir the melted mixture well.
  • Remove from heat.
  • Add in the peppermint oil and citronella essential oil.
  • Mix very well.
  • Carefully, pour the mixture into tins of your choice, which you can find on Amazon.
  • Let the mixture fully cool before putting the lid on top of the tins. This will take a couple of hours.

Now, you have an all natural bug balm to keep the pests at bay. While commercial repellants may be very effective, this does not outweigh the risks for DEET poisoning. With this all natural product, you can feel better about what you’re putting on your skin. Re-apply as needed throughout the day, and make sure to carry this handy concoction with you when you travel!
