Give Your Workout a Boost with Peppermint Essential Oil

Unbeknownst to most, peppermint essential oil is a great way to get more out of your workouts.  Yes I realize this sounds a bit strange, but just stay with me and I’ll explain how this works.

As you may or may not know, members of the mint family, such as peppermint, have been shown to be effective pain-killers as well as anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, and antioxidant agents.  These are all effects that can help you work harder and recover quicker from intense exercise.  The peppermint oil can be applied directly to sore muscles (just a drop or two combined with a carrier oil such as sweet almond) to relieve the pain and inflammation that often occurs after working out.

In addition to the above use for peppermint essential oil, there is strong evidence that indicates that ingestion of the oil can bring an amazing boost to daily workouts.

A recent study published in the Journal of the International Society of Sports Nutrition examined the effect of peppermint oil on runners.  What they found was nothing short of astonishing.  The participants consumed .05ml of peppermint essential oil daily for ten days.  Each runner that drank the oil had improved exercise performance, respiratory function, blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory gas exchange.  And if that were not enough, they also were shown to have exercised 25% longer than before the oil and their performance during their time was increased by 51%.  They were able to exercise longer and more intensely by only adding a tiny amount of peppermint oil to a glass of water.

Now, as with all things, you should do your own research and talk to your doctor before adding in something like peppermint oil to your diet.  At the very least, peppermint oil deserves a spot in your medicine cabinet due to its muscle soothing abilities, but this new research shows promise and should be taken seriously.  You could be getting more out of your workout today, so why wait?
