Skin Care Ingredients to Avoid

Skin Care Ingredients to Avoid

skin care ingredients to avoid

There are plenty of skin care products sold by retailers and online companies. The ingredients in these products should be good for your skin, right? Unfortunately, this is usually not the case. Cheaper ingredients are used in these products that can be harsh or even harmful for your skin. Some ingredients can potentially raise or lower hormone levels, which is alarming! To make their products last longer, commercial skin care products normally have preservatives that are anything but helpful for your skin. Here are some skin care ingredients to avoid –

Alcohol (or Isopropyl) – This ingredient dries your skin, and strips it of natural oils and protective skin barriers. This makes you more prone to fungus, infection, dirt, and bacteria penetrating the skin. Made from propylene, it is a petroleum byproduct and can be found in hair care products, beauty products, skin care products, and perfumes. When ingested internally, a fatal dose is less than one ounce.

Fragrances – Synthetic fragrances can contain carcinogenic ingredients, and are not closely monitored or regulated by any government agency. Many people are allergic to synthetic fragrances. They can cause rashes, irritation, redness, and in extreme cases even vomiting. A fantastic alternative to synthetic fragrances and perfumes are 100% natural essential oils. You can even make your own perfume using them.

Oxybenzone – Classified as a chemical sunscreen agent, oxybenzone is found in an alarmingly large percentage of store bought sunscreens, especially in the U.S. It acts the same way hormones do when absorbed into the bloodstream via the skin. This can affect breast milk production, and hormone disorders in both men and women.

Parabens – Parabens are hard to identify on ingredient labels, because they go by many different names. Parabens are used as a preservatives in skin care ingredients and to prevent bacterial contamination. Parabens have been linked to allergic reactions, insulin resistance, and even cancer. The FDA does not regulate this ingredient, because they say it is safe. Experts disagree and have strong opinions when it comes to this endocrine disruptor.

When it comes to skin care ingredients to avoid, it can be difficult to do so. Products bought at the store or even online tend to contain at least one of these harmful ingredients. The best way to avoid these ingredients is to make your own products using organic ingredients. Organic coconut oil, for example, can be used as the base for many skin care products. Essential Oils can be combined with other ingredients to make fragrant products you can feel good about putting on your skin.
