How to Use Tea Tree Oil for Nail Fungus

If you have ever had athlete’s foot, you know how embarrassing and unsightly foot fungus can be.  No one likes the look of red, peeling skin and yellow thickened nails.  If you think that your only option is expensive and chemical-laden anti-fungal creams think again.

For centuries people have been treating fungal infections with Melaleuca oil, otherwise known as Tea Tree Oil.  The benefits of pure tea tree oil have been testified to over and over again.  This oil is an incredible anti-fungal and anti-septic agent.  The uses of tea tree oil vary from curing yeast infection to pink eye, but we are going to look closely at the application of tea tree oil for nail fungus.

We don’t often think about it, but funguses live all around us.  Mold, mildew, yeast, and common yard mushrooms are all types of fungus.  The fungus that causes nail infections is called dermatophytes and they see your skin as an ideal breeding ground.  Fungus in general prefers a dark, damp environment which is why it often appears on the body in areas that meet these criteria.  The groin, the feet, and the fingernails under artificial nails are all spots that frequently get fungal infections.  In fact, jock itch, athlete’s foot, and ringworm are all fungal infections of the skin that can be treated and healed by tea tree oil.

You can pick up this organism anywhere, but communal showers, public pools, and unsanitary nail salons are amongst the more common places to encounter the fungus.  Wearing shoes, drying your feet completely, and keeping your toenails short can all help in preventing infection.

The Tea Tree Oil Toenail Fungus Pedicure

Since foot fungus is the most common type of nail fungus that people encounter, I have come up with this great at-home pedicure that will help heal your skin while killing the unwanted fungus.

What you will need:

  • Tub or container to soak your feet
  • White vinegar
  • Bristled nail brush
  • Foot file (emery board style)
  • Orange wood sticks
  • Coconut Oil
  • Tea Tree oil (always get pure tea tree oil)
  • Cotton socks

Steps:

  1. Fill the container with 1 part vinegar to 2 parts warm water and soak for 15-20 minutes
  2. After soaking, lightly brush away dead skin from the feet using the nail brush and foot file.  Avoid areas that are inflamed or sore.
  3. Use an orange wood stick to gently remove build-up from under the nails.  You can also push the cuticles back if you choose.  It is imperative that you not break the skin, so be careful when performing this step.
  4. Warm a handful of coconut oil in your hand and mix-in 5-10 drops of tea tree oil.  Apply the mixture to your feet focusing on the toes and nails in particular.  Repeat for the other foot.
  5. Place socks over your oil slathered feet and wear them for a couple of hours in order to give the oils time to penetrate your feet.

Once you have completed the pedicure, make it a part of your morning routine to apply a few drops of pure tea tree oil to the infected sites until all sign of the fungus is gone.

I recently put pure tea tree oil directly on my big toe that had gotten an ugly fungus somewhere. It starting working almost immediately. Now I just have to wait for the nail to grow out.
